Haaaaaaappy Birthday tooo meeeeee! In order to celebrate my twenty-first birthday with you all today, I’ve decided to share twenty-one lessons I’ve learned in my life. Some are very silly and others are more serious, but they’ve all helped shape me into the person I’ve become. Take these things with a grain of salt. Just because they are true for me, doesn’t necessarily mean they are the “right” answer. With that being said, I hope you enjoy my list!
Perfection is not the goal. Sometimes the pressure to succeed can be more damaging than the fallout of failure. Always keep in mind your end goal and figure out the path that is best for you.
Plan to be spontaneous.
Live authentically. This is your life and no one else’s. Find out who you are and stay true to that person.
Use your stickers.
Cats, chocolate, Ernie, tea, truth, cubed, Stefan, morning, white, peanut butter, bath, Minnie, pepper, Dean, gold, Rory, and Tom. Oh yeah, and they were most definitely on a break. (Wrong answers include: dogs, vanilla, Bert, coffee, dare, crushed, Damon, night, black, jelly, shower, Mickey, salt, Sam, silver, Lorelai, Jerry, and Rachel’s point of view.)
Sometimes the process is the product.
Wonderful opportunities may come along at the wrong time. It’s okay to say no.
Feel what you need to feel. Don’t ever feel pressured to set aside your emotions and “deal with something” first. Cry, laugh, smile, frown. Stand on your head if you think that’ll help. Our emotions are a part of who we are, so embrace them.
Replacing the lemon-flavored Jolly Rancher with the blue raspberry one was possibly the worst corporate decision ever made.
Read anything and everything you want. Classic novels, picture books, paperbacks, nooks. Heck, even give braille a try. You’ll never know the wonder that is out there unless you crack open a book and start.
Things don’t have to be appealing to be valuable. Embrace the word ‘interesting.’
If you sit on a towel at the beach, you are a magnet for sand. If you sit on a spare bed sheet at the beach, you are a genius.
Go twenty-four hours without looking in the mirror. Then see how you feel about yourself.
Always try. Use success as your reward and failure as your motivation.
Whenever you think your life is unfair, just remember that there are lefties out there who can’t write with gel pens or in three ring binders.
Sometimes we need to explore the extremes in order to settle in the middle. Find the space in this world that is right for you.
It’s okay to change your mind.
Map your subject. Whether it’s a flower or a situation in life, explore all things from different angles. Doing so just might introduce you to something you didn’t expect and actually adore.
Monica Geller is my spirit animal.
Learn all the rules. Then learn to break them wisely.
Make your own mistakes. Don’t let anyone else make them for you.
Here’s to a terrific twenty-first year and to living life to the fullest! There’s no telling what’s in store…
